Ever have an IDRAC6 or 7 starts to give you issues or not act correctly? Perhaps an iDRAC reset did not fix your problem? Well here is lowest level iDRAC/Lifecycle Controller reset you can do. This method will delete all configurations from the Lifecycle Controller if you want to start over from scratch or before the system is retired.
From a Windows PC or Server run the following command: (I believe you can replace winrm with wsman for Linux but don’t quote me on that)
If successful, you will get a ReturnValue of 0. Now you wait. It takes about 5 to 10 minutes to complete. The LCD on the front panel will go dark and the iDRAC will no longer be accessible. After about 5 minutes you will hear all of the fans spin up to max RPM and stay there for a bit. When they calm down, the LCD should show back up and the iDRAC will be back to a default state with an IP address of 192.168.0.120. Depending on the version of firmware you have on the server, this might wipe out your iDRAC License key so export it first or be prepared to request a new key thru your support portal or via phone. Also don’t be surprised if the server takes a bit longer to reboot the first time after the wipe. It needs to recalibrate it’s power and thermal parameters after a wipe.
Another troubleshoot tidbit, you can flash the Lifecycle Controller via the iDRAC GUI interface. Current 12th generation servers can flash any hardware via the iDRAC GUI (but that is a topic for another post) but ANY 11th or 12th generation server can update it’s Lifecycle Controller via the iDRAC. This is most helpful when the Lifecycle Controller needs a repair or has a firmware older than May of 2012. Simple download the latest LC Repar file (iDRAC7 – http://ftp.dell.com/FOLDER01466145M/1/LC2.1_Q2Block_Repair_Package_1.1.5.165_A00.usc or iDRAC6 – http://ftp.dell.com/FOLDER00502596M/1/BDF_1.5.5_BIN-12.usc as of 8/2/13) and utilize it in the iDRAC GUI as if it is an iDRAC firmware upgrade.
That’s it, you now have a fixed or updated Lifecycle Controller.
